By teaching your child the words for this week, you are actually introducing him/her to early math terms. Math can be
as simple as observing and engaging in everyday activities. This week, point out items that are part of a pair such as
shoes, socks, earrings or dice. What pairs can your child name?

Make a Pair
Trace your shoes onto a piece of paper. Then, cut them out and decorate them with crayons or paint. Place them side by side to show how they make up a pair (of shoes).
Create shoe prints
Choose a pair of shoes that have an interesting pattern on the bottom. Dip the base of your shoes into some paint and make a print. They exist as a pair and also each print makes up one half of a pair which can be shown by printing each shoe in two different colors.
Use activities with a story
After reading the story Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, mash and mix some of the materials that Pete stepped in (strawberries, blueberries). Then add water to see what happens to the mixture. You can ask a question like “What will happen when we add the water?” Pour it in a glass for delicious fruit water.
Get in the kitchen!
Work on early math skills by helping your child cut various foods in half. You can use a child safe plastic knife and hands to cut bananas, oranges, etc. Talk to your child about where to cut it to cut it in half and how to put them back together to make a pair.
