Size is a way that children can categorize and sort items. Sorting items into different categories like “big” and “small” is a pre-math skill that helps them observe and compare the world around them. This week as you read to-gether, run errands, or do chores around the house, have your child point out items that are “big” and “small.”

Draw a Snowmen
On a sheet of paper, draw the foundation of a snowman using three different size circles, with the largest on the bottom and the smallest on top. Talk with your child about the differences in size. Provide crayons or construction paper for your child to complete the snowman.
Play with Shadows
When it gets dark outside, grab a flashlight and turn off the lights in a room in your home. Place your hand in front of the light to cast a shadow of your hand. Show your child how the light magnifies the size of your hand on the wall. Let everyone have a turn making hand puppet shadows.
Make a Magnifying glass!
Grab a clear plastic bottle (a larger bottle works best). Draw a circle shape at the neck of the bottle. It needs to be here so you create a disc shape when you cut it out. Cut out the circle and pour a little water into the disc. Carefully Hold it over your book or paper to make the letters bigger. Make Fake Snow!
You can purchase Insta-Snow from your local craft store or make it at home. The main ingredient to fake snow is sodium polyacrylate, which is the absorbent material found in diapers. Open a diaper, place the sodium polyacrylate in a bowl and slowly add water. The more water you add, the slushier your “snow” will be. Place in the refrigerator to chill, if desired. Adult supervision required.

Puede comprar “In-sta-Snow” en una tienda de arte o hacerla en su casa. El ingrediente principal de la nieve falsa es poliacrilato de sodio, el material absorbente de los pañales. Abra un pañal y ponga el poliacrilato en un tazón. De a poquito, agregue agua. Cuanta más agua ponga, más líquida será la nieve.
