Need a Computer?

We have received an overwhelming response to the MeckTech program so far and are no longer accepting new applications or waitlist entries. We are evaluating our model as we work to serve our waitlist applicants and will reopen applications if we are able to obtain more devices and funding. Please keep an eye on this page for any updates.

The MeckTech Computer Kit Program distributes technology to Mecklenburg County adults without a home computer. Each kit is free and includes a refurbished personal computer with preloaded productivity and education applications as well as all necessary hardware needed for set-up.

These computers use a Linux operating system with opensource software compatible with many Windows programs (ex: LibreOffice can read, create, and edit Microsoft Office documents). However, some programs that are proprietary to a Windows environment may not have a Linux equivalent.

Applicants Must:

  • Not have a household desktop or laptop computer
  • Be 18 years or older
  • Be a Mecklenburg County resident
  • Understand that MeckTech devices are provided as-is with open-source software only and do not come with dedicated technical support.
  • Meet at least one of the following criteria:
    • Adult needing to educate and reskill for educational and/or career success
    • Adult needing access to telehealth services
    • Adult needing access to essential Mecklenburg County services online (TANF, Unified Workforce, DSS, etc.)

When Will I Receive a Computer?

MeckTech is currently working through our extensive waitistcomputers are being distributed on a first-come, first-served basis as we are able to obtain new devices. We hope to serve as many members of our community as possible, but we have limited supply and overwhelming demand and unfortunately cannot guarantee that we will be able to fulfill all waitlist requests.

If you have already applied for our waitlist, we have your information and will reach out if devices become available; please be patient as there is a backlog of customers who have requested a device. We are unable to provide status updates about your waitlist application or your place in line.

Important Update: As of April 1, 2021, MeckTech / Charlotte Mecklenburg Library can no longer provide replacement devices or technical support for MeckTech devices. We apologize for any inconvenience. You may access our FAQs here.
